Hotels in Andermatt

The hotels in Andermatt range from cheap to expensive. Andermatt ski area is fabulous. If you have touring skis, you can have a lot of fun out there. As we where there, the first two days it was snowing hard. We didn't have to go far for "fresh pow". If you go there, don't forget to go through the "Felsental" (rock valley) but only if there is a lot of snow. It's really cool. You'll get to another village, where you can have lunch. A taxi bus will bring you back. The piste skiing at Andermatt is also very nice, with long runs to the village. There is also a controlled unprepared (off-piste) area within the piste area. The top gondola is quite small, and you'll have to wait about half an hour sometimes. Make sure you also go to the two smaller areas (Andermatt is built up in three areas.) They sometimes provide better sunny conditions and they also offer very nice off-piste skiing.

Andermatt Sights

I have been visiting Andermatt on a regular basis for the last 10 years, and it is without a doubt one of my favourite resorts in Europe. With accessible back-country, unusually large snowfalls and a cosy village feel that I personally love, it's a place that just keeps me coming back!

Andermatt is a small town in the Swiss canton of Uri with a population of around 1300. The town stands at the crossroads between the northern, southern eastern and western regions of Switzerland and is reached by five impressive Alpine passes; the Oberalp, St Gotthard, Realp, Furka and Göscheneralp. Andermatt’s origins can be traced back to Allemanic tribes who settled in the area. Between 1818 and 1831. The nearby St. Gotthard Pass was opened up to postal coaches and as the last stop before the pass, Andermatt flourished and became a popular spa town. The opening of the St Gotthard railway tunnel caused a reversal of fortune. In 1865 the town became a garrison town of the Swiss Army and is now a military training centre. The town’s prosperity has been revived by tourism, which is now an important source of income. Andermatt makes an attractive alternative to the more expensive ski resorts.
